New Islamic ceramics display in Liverpool
2nd Jul, 2009 to 2nd Jul, 2010
Over the past nine months staff and volunteers in the Ethnology department at National Museums Liverpool (NML) have been unpacking, re-storing, documenting and photographing the museums’ little known Islamic collection. At the beginning of June a display of the Islamic collection was installed in the Weston Discovery Centre at World Museum Liverpool

Emma Martin, Head of Ethnology and Curator of Asian collections writes, “This fascinating collection ranges from 12th century painted dishes from Iran, to 15th century pottery sherds from Fustat, an important trading centre in Egypt, to modern day tourist souvenirs."
"Having unpacked the collection it was clear that it needed more attention and research. With the help of the Museum Partnerships department we have secured a grant from the Museums Association's Effective Collections scheme. This grant paid for an Islamic specialist to come and review the collection and make recommendations as to how we can best use the collection, which might include new displays at NML, loans to other organisations or possibly more research into the collection's history.”
