SECOND ACCES ARCHIVES SEMINAR:
Egyptological paper and photographic archives in Museums and
Collections
DATE: Monday 15th March 2010, 2-5pm
VENUE: The Griffith Institute, 1 St. John Street , Oxford OX1 2LG
The first ACCES seminar on archives took place on Monday 5th October 2009 at the office of the Egypt Exploration Society,
The discussion also included the issue of how to prioritise material within archive collections for cataloguing and digitisation. The issue of prioritisation is one that is best developed across all (UK) Egyptological archive material, so that digitisation can focus on groups of similar material now held in different institutions, for example, material from the work of one excavator, or a single excavation or site.
Aims of the second archives seminar:
-
presentation of the content and curation of the Griffith Institute archive
-
establishment of criteria for developing priorities for digitisation across UK Egyptological archives
-
best-practice for digitisation, including the intended uses of the digitised archive
-
methods of electronic cataloguing of archive material
The seminar will begin with a visit to the Griffith Institute’s archive, followed by a discussion of relevant issues and refreshments. The seminar will be led by Dr Jaromir Malek, Editor of the Topographical Bibliography and Keeper of the Archive at the Griffith Institute, and the discussion chaired by Dr Karen Exell, Curator,
